Settle your stomach with 7Up

Today I learned of some interesting information.

I was among a group of travellers and I was telling them of my experience of ill-health in Bolivia. Jasmine, one of the travellers told me that she just had a rough week too. "I was sick from Monday to Thursday," she said. "I couldn't keep anything down and I was constantly vomiting. So eventually I had to go to hospital."

"And what did they do," I asked, expecting to hear a resolution involving heavy medication.

"The doctor told me to remain horizontal and to keep drinking 7Up which has been shaken up. Not Sprite... 7Up. Only 7Up. Apparently it's called 7Up because it has a pH which is slightly above neutral, i.e. 7. Hence, 7 Up. You shake it up so it loses its fizz and you lie horizontal and it kills all the bugs in your stomach. I did this and I got better very quickly."

I have since done a little research and apparently the theory of 7Up being slightly above a neutral pH is a myth - it actually has a pH of 3.67 which makes it rather acidic. But hey, if you find yourself in gastro-intestinal distress and at risk of dehydration and malnutrition I guess 7Up is a better option than intoxicating your body with horrible, evil prescription drugs.

Or you can do what I did: allow your body heal itself. The power that made the body, heals the body. Yay! :D

[Above] "Seven-Up... You Like it... it likes you!" If you look closely you can almost see their teeth rotting. "Buy a case today!"

    I'm such a dufus....

I should have told you that the best thing for 'the runs' is still lemonade with a pinch of salt....it definitely works. A few other remedies are-

fresh pomegranate, not juiced, but eaten whole and obviously without the peel!

a glass of water mixed with a couple of tablespoons of fresh natural yoghurt.

a brew made from a teaspoon of fennel seeds with a couple of cardamon pods is great to settle the stomach too.

    Take care

  2. Are those remedies just for the runs?

The feeling I hate most is that when I have a really sensitive stomach and I can't bear the sight or smell of food - even though I am starving. I used to eat fruit in these cases but this didn't help in Bolivia.

Do you have any home remedies for this as well? :)

The fennel brew would probably help with that.

There is another home remedy called 'choorun' which is a blend of herbs and spices, however, you probably wouldn't be able to get it where you are!
I would send you some, but it may get mistaken for drugs and you might end up in some place equivalent to the 'Bangkok Hilton'!!!

I tell you what, i promise to carry some with me every time I go abroad....... you never know where we might bump into each other!:)

    Stay well

A great little bit of info!

  6. Hey guys,

I have recently learned that you can also eliminate the gas from the 7Up by stirring it with a metal spoon for about 2 minutes.

If you try it please let me know if it works. :)
