If I remember correctly, in Guatemala the pattern of the women's traditional clothing indicates which indigenous group they belong to. There are many different clans in Guatemala and they each have a different dialect of the Mayan language.

So for example, at markets, by seeing the clothes others are wearing people can figure out what dialect to speak with each other to negotiate prices.

At this juncture I believe it's important to point out that I said, "If I remember correctly..."
