Graffiti #4: Police and Authority

In the 1970's the CIA (of the USA) sponsored the overthrow and assassination of the presidents of most South American countries, placing murdering, military dictators in their place - over who they had somewhat more control. This is not conspiracy theory... this happened!

In Argentina it was President, General Videla, under whose command around 30,000 people "disappeared" (i.e. were murdered) between 1976-1983. The name of Chile's murdering dictator was Augusto Pinochet and over 3,200 people "disappeared" between 1976-1981.

The following is a series of graffiti and posters which I found in Valparaíso, Chile and Argentina. They reflect the sentiments about the police and army which still exists until today.

LOS QUE DAN LOS GOLPES, ...Y ESCONDEN LA MANO...
("Those who give the beatings and hide the hand ")

DAR... HASTA QUE DUELA
("To Give... Until it hurts")

LA POLICIA ES UNA BROMA
("The police is a joke")

Ironically, I thought the police in Chile were great! They were kind, helpful, well presented, well-spoken and extremely respectable - the best police I've encountered in South America. I questioned a local about this and they said, "Yes, the police on the street are okay, but those in higher positions of power are corrupt to the bones, as always."
